Industrial Hygienist III

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Works both independently and with supervision to develop, implement, and supervise the Kwajalein Range Services (KRS) Industrial Hygiene Program and Safety and Occupational Health Plan (SOHP) for projects and operating facilities. 
  • Plans and conducts independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of industrial hygiene and safety compliance, techniques, control procedures, and criteria.
  • Reports to and receives operational direction and functional and/or technical supervision from the Safety Supervisor and Safety and Health (S&H) Manager.
  • Responsible for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of chemical, biological and physical agents in the work place and certain community areas.
  • Provides technical support, training and program development, and guidance in industrial hygiene areas, safety and engineering, occupational health and fire prevention.
  • Provides technical direction and functional supervision of industrial hygiene technician type duties to other department personnel as assigned.
  • Interprets and applies relevant rules, regulations and standards, record keeping compliance and provides support to projects, groups, areas and facilities.
  • Develops, updates and facilitates S&H training courses and management procedures in such areas of respiratory protection, confined space entry, hearing conservation, lead and asbestos abatement, ergonomics, and mold.
  • Develop and maintain an inventory of facility activities and associated exposure monitoring activities and plans, including the Local Occupational Health Hazard Inventories (LOHHI).
  • Maintains and operates industrial hygiene sampling and monitoring equipment.
  • Maintains working relationships with personnel in Mission Operations, Community, Logistics and Functional departments and subcontractors to ensure compliance with SOHP, Performance Work Statement (PWS) and Contract Deliverables (CDRLs).
  • Assists department managers and supervisors on accident investigations, preparing reports and providing industrial hygiene support as required.
  • Contributes to the implementation of the SOHP, accident prevention programs, recognition, evaluation, and control of hazardous activities and/or conditions during base operation and community life.
  • Advises supervisor(s) of noncompliance; stops work in imminent danger situations and under conditions of imminent adverse environmental impact; and reports actions to supervisor; recommends acceptable work practices and ensures their implementation.
  • Ensures dissemination of information on new and/or revised regulations to supervisors and employees through verbal and written communications and through revisions to programs.
  • Executes other duties as assigned by the Safety Supervisor and/or S&H Manager; additional duties may include, but are not limited to, work assignments on outer islands, including, but not limited to Roi-Namur.
JOB SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
Required: 
  • Technical knowledge of industrial hygiene and safety compliance systems, principles, and calculations; application of health and safety protection methods and materials.
  • Demonstrated ability working with industrial hygiene sampling and monitoring equipment.
  • Good communication and public speaking skills to provide training to various organizations.
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
Desired: 
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma program tools and methodologies and/or Six Sigma Certification.
  • Knowledge of 3M Detection Management software.   
EXPERIENCE (Years):
Required: 
  • 5 years of relevant industrial hygiene, safety and occupational health experience. 
  • Experience which would be considered for relevancy includes, but is not limited to, current knowledge of industry and regulatory standards and criteria in Basic Sciences; Occupational Disease, Illness, Injury and Surveillance (biostatistics, epidemiology, toxicology); Health Hazards (ergonomics/human factors, physical stressors, biological stressors, chemical stressors); Work Environments (indoor air, industrial processes); Program Management Principles (investigation methods, ethics, risk communication, guidelines and standards, data management and integration, emergency response); Evaluation Practices (instrumentation, sampling methods/techniques, analytical chemistry); Hazard Controls (engineering, PPE, administrative); and Community Stressors (air pollution, hazardous waste).   
Desired: 
  • 8 years of relevant industrial hygiene, safety and occupational health experience. 
  • Experience with Aviation and Marine shipyard operations.  
 
EDUCATION:
Required: 
  • Bachelor's of Science in Industrial Hygiene, Engineering or other closely related field.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) through the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.
Desired: 
  • Master's Degree with emphasis in Industrial Hygiene with 3-5 years in related field.
  • Current Marine Chemist Certification.
OTHER SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Common Access Card (CAC) required to perform job duties.

  • US Citizenship is required.
  • US DoD Secret clearance or the ability to obtain one is required.
  • Must be able to relocate to the United States Army Kwajalein Atoll.
  • Traveling to Kwajalein Atoll, you and your dependents are required to have a valid passport in your possession prior to relocation.  You and your dependents must maintain a current passport during your stay on Kwajalein Atoll.
