Environmental Engineer/Scientist I

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reports to and receives operational direction, functional and/or technical supervision from the Environmental Supervisor.
  • Provides oversight of the environmental sampling program and performs sampling of environmental media in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Performs inspections of Hazardous Materials, Waste, and Petroleum Product storage and collection areas.
  • Conducts environmental monitoring and/or sampling in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Implements environmental compliance program for KRS projects and operating facilities under the direction of assigned supervisor. 
  • Plans and conducts independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of environmental compliance regulations, techniques, control procedures, and criteria. 
  • Maintains a public education program including, but not limited to, generating electronic publications to raise awareness of environmental issues and coordinating community activities for special events such as Earth Day.
  • Performs data entry, runs reports and develop charts to determine requirements and trend analysis of environmental data such as spill trends and training requirements.
  • Maintains daily working relationships with project or facility contractor and/or subcontractor personnel to monitor compliance with environmental services program.
  • Provides technical direction to operations personnel on environmental compliance issues.
  • Monitors daily work practices utilized by KRS and/or other contractors and subcontractors to ensure compliance with established programs and applicable regulations; advises supervisor(s) of noncompliance; stops work in imminent danger situations and under conditions of imminent adverse environmental impact; reports actions to supervisor; recommends acceptable work practices and ensures their implementation.
  • Remains cognizant of federal, state, local, or host country regulations affecting environmental compliance.
  • Accompanies regulatory compliance officers and/or inspectors during project audits to provide technical and/or operational support relative to compliance with applicable standards.
  • Assists supervisor in preparing specific reports as required in accordance with KRS contract deliverables and requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
       
 
JOB SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
Required: 
  • Refined skills in oral and written communication.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Current knowledge of industry and regulatory standards and criteria pertinent to environmental compliance, including RCRA, CWA, CAA, SDWA, and/or NEPA.
 
 
Desired: 
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma program tools and methodologies and/or Six Sigma Certification.
  • Knowledge of the USAKA Environmental Standards.
  • Knowledge of environmental sampling and analysis in accordance with SW-846 methods.  
    EXPERIENCE (Years):
    Required: 
  • 0 - 2 years environmental compliance-related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Science/Management, Safety and Health, or an equivalent.  
     
Desired: 
  • 2 years environmental compliance-related experience, especially related to DoD operations and/or remote locations and experience working with foreign governing regulations.
  • Experience with environmental sampling and analysis methods.
  • Experience implementing the USAKA Environmental Standards.
  • Experience with Natural Resource Management issues (for example protected and/or endangered species, protected vegetation).
 
 
EDUCATION:
Required: 
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Science/Management, Safety and Health, or an equivalent.
  • Associate's Degree in an equivalent discipline and at least 5 years of equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of the Bachelor's degree.
 
 
Desired: 
  • Certified training in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER), and DOT/IATA/IMDG Hazardous Material Transportation by vessel, surface and air.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) certification.
 
OTHER SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Common Access Card (CAC) required to perform job duties.
  • This position is unaccompanied.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required.
  • Must be able to relocate to the United States Army Kwajalein Atoll.
  • Traveling to Kwajalein Atoll, you are required to have a valid passport in your possession prior to relocation.
  • You must maintain a current passport during your stay on Kwajalein Atoll.
