Systems Engineer III

Location: Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for the Optics Department server environment; administrate, maintain, troubleshoot and architect.
  • Maintains operational status of all mission critical systems, including 50+ servers, running Windows Server 2012 and Red Hat Linux 6.
  • Performs patch management on Windows 2012 and RHEL Linux systems.
  • Maintains hardware lifecycle by deploying replacement systems in a timely fashion.
  • Supports real time, reactive computing systems.
  • Performs server and application monitoring on a daily basis.
  • Performs root cause analysis and resolution for hardware and software issues.
  • Works closely with Software and System Engineers to evaluate and improve application performance.
  • Maintains flexible schedule to meet mission requirements.
  • Performs project studies and coordinates resources to execute project milestones.  
  • Ensures system security by evaluating, implementing, and managing appropriate enterprise solutions in accordance with Army regulations (AR 25-2).
  • Performs Operating System upgrades as required or assigned.
  • Implements upgrades for site-wide critical services.
  • Creates and maintains user accounts.
  • Archives and examines audit logs, performs network scans, and generates Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) checklists to verify compliance.
  • Assists network personnel to troubleshoot and resolve application issues.
  • Provides advice on project costs, design concepts, or design changes.
  • Documents design specifications, installation instructions, and other system-related information.
  • Verifies stability, interoperability, portability, security, or scalability of system architecture.
  • Collaborates with engineers or software developers to select appropriate design solutions or ensure the compatibility of system components.
  • Demonstrates initiative to move beyond status quo, such as recommending improvements and ways to optimize systems.
  • Travels to other islands in the atoll via small plane, boat and helicopter to perform job duties as needed or assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
JOB SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
Required: 
  • Willingness and physical ability to travel to islands in the atoll via small plane, boat and helicopter.
  • Willingness and ability to maintain a flexible schedule to meet mission requirements.
  • Proficient in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and 6, server and operating system deployment, RAIDs, kick start installations, Centrify, scripting, server and/or network storage implementation and support.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively perform extensive hardware and software troubleshooting in a fast paced environment.
  • Proficient with Group Policy and Active Directory.
  • Demonstrated ability securing systems effectively using Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) STIGs.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform operating system upgrades including the migration of existing applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform system administration in a high availability, 24x7 production environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot using system monitoring tools.
  • Proficiency with RHEL and VMware.
  • Demonstrated ability creating and maintaining user accounts effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze needs and product requirements to create a design.
  • Effective communicator; demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple departments, including software, information assurance, networks, and communications; demonstrated ability to effectively act as a liaison between optics and these other departments to identify and solve problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, detailed and concise technical documentation, including drawings, requirements documents, installation manuals, and reports.
Desired: 
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma program tools and methodologies and/or Six Sigma Certification.
  • Knowledge of camera and/or control systems.
  • Basic knowledge of DoD Information Assurance, RMF, particularly pertaining to implementation on servers and scanning for compliance.
  • Proficiency with BASH, VBScript and Powershell.
  • Data base management system software including but not limited to Oracle PL/SQL.
  • Object or component oriented development software including but not limited to C++, Oracle Java, Python and/or Swift.
  • Operating system software including but not limited to Hewlett Packard HP-UX, Linux, Ubuntu.  
EXPERIENCE (Years):
Required: 
  • 5 years of experience as a Systems Engineer or related in a Linux environment utilizing VMware or other virtualization technology, performing programming/scripting and Linux performance troubleshooting.  
Desired: 
  • 3+ years of experience working with Windows 7, 10 Server 2008 and/or Server 2012 administration.
  • 5+ years working as a Server Administrator.
EDUCATION:
Required: 
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or related discipline.
  • CompTIA Security+ certification.
  • Linux+ or other Linux computing environment certification.
Desired: 
  • Windows computing environment certification.
OTHER SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Common Access Card (CAC) required to perform job duties.
  • This position is accompanied.
  • US Citizenship is required.
  • Active US DoD Secret clearance is required.
  • US DoD Top Secret clearance or the ability to obtain one is required.
  • Must be able to relocate to the United States Army Kwajalein Atoll.
  • Traveling to Kwajalein Atoll, you and your dependents are required to have a valid passport in your possession prior to relocation. 
  • You and your dependents must maintain a current passport during your stay on Kwajalein Atoll.
